"this is getting wierd, man..."

"You signed up kid" Zeke shrugged as I started up the engine.
I put the roadtrip tape into the slot and pressed play.
As we winded throught the streets of Calgary, a soulful string arrangement weeped through the speakers.
"No. No you did not!" I turn and grin at Standovich

"I did indeed"

The strings faded out to a snaredrum accompanied by a bass and an electric guitar played to sound almost like a violin.
Yes. It was Play It All Night Long by Warren Zevon.

I looked down at the gun I was holding.
"I'm guessing I'll need to use this?"

"Once we go through the conduit, yes!" I say
"Ok, I'm going to lay it all down for you, we recruited you, because we believe you and your family have the potential to be great warriors skilled in Magic and warfare, which is exactly what we need in our war against Demons. Demons, come from another world,which we call Infernum. we're going to Alia terra because it is positioned 'in between' Earth and Infernum. It's a place both us and the Demons can access. We are held by the Treaty of Heliopolis, which states that neither side of this war can invade the other's home world. in accordance tot eh Treaty, we in stead fight in Alia Terra, a world that can only be entered via Conduit, which is a Magical portal to the other Dimension. Taht jumpsuit you're wearing now portects you from the "Differential Reality" of Alia Terra. Otherwise you'd mutate and possibly die."

"Any Questions?" Zeke calls from the passenger seat

"I didn't say you could involve my family. this is insane."

"I know this sound absolutely nuts, for a while I thought I was nuts too. For now you're family is safe, and we won't do anything to put them in harms way.After all, you signed up, and only you signed up."

"okay, I have a question. WHY THE HECK DID YOU CHOOSE ME?!! I've never shot one of these tihngs before, I'm an accountant, and I've only read the Lord of the Rings. why did you choose somebody like that?"

"A friend of mine, He told me all about you Chris Torren, he said I had to seek you out, to enact the Grand Scheme. He said one day you'd replace one of us."
I gulped, I didn't feel as happy about this mission as I was this morning, we were almost there now, the sun was just sinking below the Coolies and rock spires of Drumheller.
"As for the gun, Zeke has shot more than one a bunch of times,. He'll teach ya."

"do we have time to teach me?"

Zeke and I exchange glances then he turns to face Chris.
"Yeah we got time, fot his one, you and I will be rear guard. we'll stay back and pick off Demons trying to flank Rodge or Iggy"

"Demons."

[Mtncal95]

Zeke-

"They're ugly monsters. Expect to be scared out of your mind. Most Demons don't bother with Alchemy to protect themselves from Differential Reality and it in turn mutates them into abominations, they have a form for Alia Terra and one for Infernum. I'm told they look fairly normal in their home realm."

[smartelec]

"you know what? I'm going to stop trying to understand what you're saying."
I climbed into the back, ready to shoot Demons, of all things.

[Mtncal95]

"You'll get used to it kid" Zeke shakes his head.

We stop at the site, where a black circular gate juts out of the ground.
"Everybody out, grab weapons and suit up" I say and cut the engine.

I walked over to the gate.
"what's this for?"

Igor-
"It's so we can get to the other side, into Alia Terra." I smile and push up my glasses "This is my favorite part"
Roger stares at the gate for a second, then shouts something looping an unintelligible, at least unintelligible to somebody who can't speak Alia Terran.

The gate bursts into flames and a whirling vortex appears inside the gate

(well that was a quick supper)

"Everybody ready?" I call to my group of four people. We should be more than a match for the Demons

"suuurrre."

Roger
"Please try to enjoy yourself Chris" I palm my face freely now that I had left my glasses in the van.

I step through the Conduit and into Alia Terra.

[smartelec]

I followed him into the portal, holding the gun the way I thought you're supposed to hold it.

Roger-
As we passed through the portal. I went blind . I pulled out the pale white clothe from my pocket and wrapped it around my head, to cover my eyes. The magic of the cloth allowed my to see. I was the only person to ever have that problem, it was a trait reserved for members of my family.
Our jumpsuits changed into armor
My Armor was a polished and bright breastlplate with R inscribed into the center a red shroud draped over my back, and Steel gauntlets and Greaves for my hands and feet.

Ezekial's was a chainmail trenchcoat and black leather gloves.

Igor's armor was like mine, but Black.the hood of his shroud was already up over his face, his glasses twinkling in the darkness.

Chris' armor was:(?)

Blood red steel armor, with black steel garments, a black helmet with a blue plume, and shimmering green boots.

"Alchemy is functional." I say and look around.
Alia Tera always mystified me. It was beautiful. A rolling sea of grass under a dark sky of unfamiliar stars. I wanted to lay back and rest, but I know I couldn't I spotted the small town at the crest of a hill.
"I spotted Savannah. The occupying forces seem to be inisde the city, no patrols.. no nothing."
